II. Public Comment
Sean McLaughlin CEO from Maui community television, invited 'Olelo
Board members to visit his organization on Maui anytime. He stated
that Akaku's Board made a commitment to a statewide vision a couple
years back along with 'Olelo. He also mentioned that Akaku's Board
has also been very committed for the last three years to streaming
video on their web site. He concluded that his organization is
very interested in and supportive of the interactive media center
concept. They have a commitment to the interactive media and look
forward to partnering with 'Olelo and others as this technology
moves forward to serve Hawai'i's statewide community.
Jude Dady Producer of the "Hey Jude" craft show thanked
the Access Services Advisory Committee and 'Olelo for producing
the live show "It's your call." She added that she is
opposed to Interactive Media Center concept in its present form;
perhaps with modifications she'd support the concept.
Jim Brewer, 'Olelo producer and member of the Access Services
Advisory Committee had three issues to address. See the attached
comments for details.
Jeff Garland commented that he liked the new design of 'Olelo
web site. He is opposed to the Interactive Media Center concept.
He suggested that we take $200,000 and give it back to Leeward
Community College and let them handle some of the training as
they did before.
Greg Wongham expressed his concern about the suspension of Jeff
Garland and James Jones. He believes that Mr. Garland and Mr.
Jones should not be denied their civil rights of using 'Olelo's
facility.
III. Approval of April 26, 2000 Minutes
Amendment was made in page eight, second paragraph, to add the
sentence: "to refer the matter to the Program Committee for
future consideration".
Marilyn Yoza moved to approve the April 26, 2000 Board Meeting
minutes as amended. Rochelle Gregson seconded the motion and the
Board unanimously approved the minutes.
IV. Reports
Finance:
Robert Mougeot moved to accept the 1999 audit report from Grant
Thornton. The motion was seconded and the Board unanimously approved
the report.
Strategic Planning Committee:
Joe Lapilio will report at a future meeting.
Program Committee:
Interactive Media Center Report - Rochelle Gregson reported
that the Program Committee held a meeting with the Access Services
Advisory Committee to discuss the Interactive Media Center. In
addition to staff support, a survey was included in'Olelo's newsletter.
For the most part, the survey response has been very positive.
The community appreciated the idea that 'Olelo was going to move
forward and open up the broader community.
ASAC's recommendations will be reviewed together with the Program
Committee. The Program Committee will then forward the recommendations
to the Finance Committee and to the next Board Meeting.
Marilyn Yoza asked if the educational community have been involved?
Linda Colburn responded that some 200 surveys went to schools.
Staff added that one-on-one interview and discussions were being
held with teachers and education professionals as well.
HENC Update - The Program Committee has not developed
recommendations as of yet, but they will be including a HENC update
at the next Board Meeting.
President's Report:
Alliance Conference - Lurline McGregor reported that staff
and three Board members attended, and that it was a good experience.
Some of the strongest themes for the direction of public access
were media literacy and video streaming, directions 'Olelo is
already taking.
Marilyn Yoza added that the conference was very informative and
extremely worthwhile. She came back with the feeling that 'Olelo
is in step with national practices.
Video Streaming - We are prepared to begin video streaming
once computer equipment arrives and is installed. We are planning
to begin within a few weeks.
LiveLine - The first show went very well. The next show
is scheduled for later this month and it will become a monthly
production after that.
Candidates in Focus: Lurline noted that this candidate
forum program, which is facilitated by'Olelo every two years is
underway.
Rochelle Gregson commented that the MidWeek magazine cover
was very positive and she encouraged everyone who missed it to
read it. The article touched on many of 'Olelo's challenges and
goals.
Chair's Report:
Susan Doyle reported that 'Olelo has a new Board member, Janis
Reischmann, who was nominated at our last Board meeting. Janis
is the Vice-President of the Hawaii Community Foundation, and
was able to attend this year's Alliance for Community Media conference.
